Methodology · Promotion criteria

How to earn the WTS 300 badge, honestly.

Five pillars, no invitations, no back-channels. The bar is public — and it moves each year with the cohort.

WTS 300 · Excellent= the seal parents can trust. Here's what earns it.

The five pillars

01

Composite score

1st filter

Every school in the ranking earns a 0–100 composite score. It rolls up seven sub-criteria — Academic Outcomes, University Placement, Facilities & Boarding, Alumni Network, Prestige, Financial Transparency and Editorial Depth — each weighted by category. Only the top 300 composites qualify for the flagship WTS 300 ranking. The threshold shifts year on year (2026: ~ 72/100 to enter), which is why Challenger and Rising Star schools can and do get promoted with a strong year.

02

Trust signal

Non-negotiable

A school must carry at least one live regulator signal: Ofsted 'Good' or better, ISI Routine Inspection with no unmet regulatory standard, KHDA 'Very Good' or better, ADEK 'Good' or better, SPEA 'Level 3' or better, NAPLAN 'Above average' cohort, or a BSO scheme inspection under the Ofsted framework. Schools with no accessible inspection stay out of the Top 300 — regardless of composite — until one is published.

03

Verified academic data

Mandatory public source

One of: DfE Key Stage 4/5 outcomes, IB Diploma average, A-Level A*/A rate, SAT/ACT average, IGCSE distinction rate, or an equivalent published national exam-board dataset. We link direct to the source in your listing. If your outcomes exist only in your own marketing brochure, they don't count — publish them on the school's website with an inspection-quality PDF and we will.

04

Editorial verdict

Written by our team

Every Top 300 school has been read on by an editor — not an algorithm. That means a three-line committed verdict (right for / wrong for / watch out for) plus an editorial confidence tag. Schools we haven't visited or spoken to a senior leader at cannot be promoted, even if the composite would otherwise clear the bar. This is the editorial ceiling on automated ranking.

05

Continuity

≥ 5 years in operation

New schools are exciting; new schools also close. We ask for at least five completed academic years — enough time for a first cohort of leavers, a first inspection cycle, and a first set of published outcomes. New-build campuses of an established brand (e.g. Wellington College Shanghai from Wellington College Berkshire) inherit the parent's continuity credit and can enter earlier.

The path up

From Challenger to WTS 300 — what actually works

Two-thirds of Challenger-300 schools have all four content pillars (regulator, data, verdict, continuity) but a composite score just below the annual threshold. The move up is nearly always driven by publishing outcomes data your website currently keeps behind a "brochure request" form. A single blog post with your last three years of A-Level A*/A rate, IB average, or Progress 8 — with the DfE / exam board URL — usually adds 4-8 points.

The other third have a regulator gap. If your school hasn't been inspected under a scheme WTS recognises, we can't promote you — regardless of how strong your composite is. For international schools this most often means signing up for the DfE's British Schools Overseas (BSO) scheme (Penta International, ISI-BSO, EDT or COBIS are the four approved bodies). A BSO 'Outstanding' or 'Good' immediately unlocks the badge.

The fastest historical promotions have come from schools that also submit their financials for our Financial Health Check. It doesn't directly change your composite, but it demonstrates institutional seriousness — which affects the editorial verdict pillar.
