Best Public Evidence Edition

The Elite Science & Research 58, 2026-27 identifies the world's strongest secondary-age institutions for systematic original scientific research, ranked from the best public evidence available today. Every entry carries a confidence grade — an honest signal of how much positional movement to expect if a school were to publish deeper cohort-conversion data. The Top 10 is convincing. The Top 20 is strong. From roughly #25 onward positional precision declines, but the confidence grade tells readers exactly that.

Confidence grades

Every entry carries one of five grades. The grade is a positional- precision signal — not a quality signal. An A- at #14 is a firm call; a C+ at #38 tells readers exactly where more evidence is needed.

A-

We would be surprised by a major positional change after a full denominator audit. Programme architecture, cohort penetration and output volume are all well documented in the public record.

B+

Clearly in approximately the right part of the table, but the school could move several places once complete cohort-conversion data is available.

B

Broad inclusion is defensible; exact position remains materially dependent on missing cohort-conversion evidence.

B-

Inclusion is defensible but positional precision is low — language, access or transparency limits the public evidence trail available for a full audit.

C+

Position could move substantially. Strong public evidence of science/Olympiad talent, but less visibility of systematic original research to lock the rank in place.

The top four are the part we are most comfortable with. KSA combines formal research training, mentored R&E, individual graduation research and a thesis with visible student publication and presentation output. NUS High's current school profile says students complete one to three years of research or innovation with universities and research institutes, and its 2025 record includes ISEF awards and exceptionally deep Olympiad achievement. TJHSST makes a major research project a senior requirement. IMSA has one of the most mature research systems anywhere, although its own public figure of roughly 75% participation gives TJHSST the edge on cohort penetration.

The Korean schools strengthen considerably once native-language material is used. Seoul Science High's 2026 R&E programme places second-year pupils into five months of supervised research with professors or PhD researchers, including concentrated laboratory work, a written report and a final presentation. Daejeon and Gyeonggi have comparable university/research-institute R&E architectures. This is why three Korean science schools now sit inside the Top 12 rather than being treated on English-language visibility alone.

Shanghai High is a significant riser. Its public material describes a genuine progression from research assignments in Grade 10 to self-selected mentored research in Grade 11 and refinement in Grade 12. Ritsumeikan also rises because this is not a newly invented research offer: it has had continuous Super Science High School status for more than two decades, international collaborative research and its own major international science fair, with actual student research papers publicly available.

The New York research schools also move sharply upward. Byram Hills now documents 139 Science Talent Search scholars and 22 finalists across the history of its three-year programme, with 99 students presenting research in its 2026 symposium. Ossining has a three-year programme with more than 100 current students and reports 103 Science Talent Search scholars. Their weakness versus the specialist science schools above them is cohort penetration and school-wide science conversion, rather than the quality of the research itself.

Two placements deserve particular caution. Renmin is #38 with C+ confidence, because the public evidence strongly supports extraordinary science/Olympiad talent but gives us much less to work with on systematic original research. We have deliberately resisted interpreting that lack of visibility as evidence that research does not happen. HNUE has the same problem even more strongly: its 2025-26 national academic results are exceptional, but the public trail we can verify is dominated by competitions rather than original research.

At the other end, the UK separation now looks clear. St Paul's > Westminster > Eton for this specialist ranking. St Paul's owns a research-grade scanning electron microscope specifically for pupil research and has a real student research community. Westminster embeds independent research projects in sixth-form science. Eton has serious STEM projects, but the evidence supports a smaller enrichment model rather than a comparable school-wide original-research system.

Our view

The strongest ranking we can responsibly produce from public evidence today. The Top 10 is convincing, the Top 20 is strong, and from roughly #25 onward the confidence grade does the heavy lifting on positional precision. The methodology, rather than the original seed order, is now driving the result.
